• State Representative for four years serving parts of Madison, Middleton, and Shorewood Hills.
• Have been a member of the Assembly Jobs and Mining, Energy and Utilities, Tourism, Government Operations, Ways and Means, Natural Resources, and Tourism and State Facilities Committees, and State Bike Council.
• Founder of an award-winning environmental and energy firm, Better Environmental Solutions, promoting practical solutions that save lives, create jobs, and reduce pollution.
• Dane County Board Supervisor for 14 years.
• Former chair of the Personnel and Finance, Lakes and Watersheds Commission, Strategic Growth Committee, Manure Management Committee, vice-chair of the Transportation Committees, Chronic Wasting Disease Taskforce, member of the Transportation Planning Board and Public Protection and Judiciary Committee.
• UW and Madison Area Technical College guest instructor and lecturer.
• Environmental Policy Advisor and Deputy Political Director for the Clinton and Gore Campaign in 1992. Interior Department Transition Team member.
• Served 17 years as an environmental educator and advocate for the Sierra Club working on clean water, air and conservation issues. Headed the Great Lakes Program to clean up Lakes Michigan and Superior and the Fox River.
• Volunteer in Service to America, VISTA volunteer, Energy Conservation Advocate for the Alaska State Division of Energy during the last energy crisis.
• Sierra Club JML 100 union vice-president and shop steward.
