Why I serve on the County Board

I ran for the County Board in 1998 to help improve our community. I saw the traffic increasing in our neighborhoods, pollution in our lakes, and taxes going up and up. I knew there was a better way.

My wife and I own a home and want to keep Dane County a great place to live and raise our two children, Tyler and Lea.

I am running to continue the progress we have made to create a better Dane County, clean up our lakes and protect our drinking water, provide more transportation solutions to reduce traffic growth, make our neighborhoods safer, reduce energy costs and pollution emissions. My goal is to continue to make Dane County the best place to live for us and our children.

But there is more to do. We need to move forward to implement our Comprehensive Plan to build a better future. We need to move forward with regional planning to improve our roads, bus system, and create a train system if it is cost-effective. We need to clean up our lakes, and protect vital family services, while holding the line on property tax growth.

To represent you, I serve...

As chair of the Personnel and Finance Committee, I oversee the county’s $450 million budget.

As Chair of the Lakes and Watersheds Commission, we have launched a major effort to clean up our lakes and beaches, and secured $4 million in new money to clean up our lakes.

As a member of the Madison Area Transportation Planning Board, I secured money to make safety improvements to University Avenue.

I have served as Chair of the Strategic Growth Committee, Vice Chair of the Chronic Wasting Disease Task Force, member of the Personnel and Finance, and Executive Committees. I have served as vice-chair of the County Transportation Committee, Chair of the Fair Share Committee, member of the Ways and Means and Land Conservation Committees, Long Range Transportation and the Solid Waste and Recycling Commissions.

My Professional Background

I am an environmental consultant and president of Better Environmental Solutions, an environmental consulting firm specializing in practical solutions that save lives, jobs and money.

For 17 years I was an educator and advocate for the Sierra Club, the nation's oldest grassroots conservation group founded by former Madisonian John Muir. As Senior Midwest Regional Representative, I work to protect our communities, rivers, lakes, parks, and air from pollution and degradation. I coordinated the Challenge to Sprawl Campaign and was a former union vice president and shop steward.

Awards: Won the FEMA Distinguished Public Service award in 2000 for helping flood victims and reduce flooding by restoring wetlands. Was also named Men's Fitness Clean Water Champion for efforts to protect our drinking water from pollution.

I am taking courses in the UW Certified Public Manager Program, have a Masters in Natural Science from the University of Oklahoma, and a B. A. in Political Economy from Middlebury College.
